Mo Farah wins 3,000 metres at the Anniversary Games after brilliant final lap

Mo Farah and Saturdays at London’s Olympic Stadium were evidently made for each other.

On a memorable afternoon here, exactly one year on from the opening ceremony of the Games of the XXX Olympiad, the spindly wizard offered another supreme demonstration of why he is the finest male distance runner Britain has ever produced. His fan club saluted him accordingly, with deafening acclaim.

Because he spoiled us rotten this time last year on two separate Saturdays, winning the Olympic 10,000m one weekend and then the 5,000m the next, the hope, during these Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games, had been that he might once again also deliver something to pop into the record books.

Sadly, that did not materialise. Yet Farah offered something just as precious with his 3,000m cakewalk: an afternoon to remind us of one of the finest talents British sport has ever witnessed, a rare champion at the absolute peak of his powers.

As Lord Coe, the old Olympic ringmaster himself, put it: “It was just an extraordinary piece of majestic running.”

And the really good news on another most super of Saturdays? Farah promised afterwards that he would be back here in 2017 when the stadium stages the world championships.
