Hopes of peace are arising in Somali capital Mogadishu which witnessed the first ever peace match in more than two decades. The peace match which was mainly intended to encourage calmness in the war-torn city was co-organised by the National Olympic committee of Somalia and the mayor of the capital Mahmoud Ahmed Nur, himself a former basketball player.

Somali govt. pledges ‘end to AU troop presence’ at soccer facility

With the Somali Football federation still struggling to get the country’s national facility ‘Stadium Mogadishu’ back into its hands from the AU military occupation, the country’s federal government pledged to end the AU troop presence at stadium Mogadishu. Deputy Minister for sport Bashir Mohamed Jama announced the pledge during a joint visit by the ministry and SFF officials to the site on Monday.

After six days of competition in Dar es Salaam, both Kenya and Egypt have secured their places at Afrobasket Women 2013 thanks to successful campaigns in the Africa zone 5 qualifier. A disappointing performance by defending champions Rwanda means they miss out on qualifying for the Afrobasket for the first time since 2005. They had made three consecutive appearances (2007, 2009, 2011).

The second edition of Somali regional football tournament for peace and development has failed to start on the scheduled time, due to the continuation of the presence of African Union Peace keepers at the country’s largest facility ‘stadium Mogadishu’ where the tournament was expected to kick off by 28th of December 2012, Somali Football Federation (SFF) announced here on Saturday.

GUELLEH BATAL WINS D’JIBOUTI SUPPER CUP

Gulleh Batle FC, one of the strongest football clubs in D’jibouti has won the country’s supper cup after walloping the current champions the AS port by 2-1 in a hotly-contested match which attracted the attention of high profile officials including minister of sports Dr Jama Elmi Okieh, Minister of budgets Amarreh Ali Said, Djibouti FA president Souleiman Hassan Waberi and members of his executive committee. Tens of thousands of zealous spectators had occupied the Guled stadium hours before the match kick off. The jubilant fans were chanting slogans to support each of the clubs.
